Migrating from the outdated Nagios system to the modern Zabbix platform allowed a Polish telecommunications company to improve IT infrastructure monitoring, enhance performance, and reduce maintenance costs.

Challenge

A Polish telecommunications company had been using the Nagios system for over a decade to monitor its IT infrastructure, which included several hundred servers and dozens of systems and databases. However, the system had accumulated technical debt, and due to the aging solution, the company faced a lack of internal specialists, community support, and engineers. At the same time, the organization had already implemented Zabbix, opening the door to standardizing monitoring within a single platform. Key challenges included migrating monitoring from Nagios to Zabbix without system downtime, eliminating reliance on outdated custom scripts, improving performance and data visualization, and training the team to independently manage the new platform.

Solution

The migration project lasted four months and included several key stages. The first step involved analyzing and auditing the current system, performing a detailed inventory of monitored elements and scripts used in Nagios. Next, the migration was planned by replicating the configuration and replacing custom scripts with Zabbix's native mechanisms. In the following phase, the system was gradually implemented to ensure uninterrupted monitoring operations. Additionally, data was optimized and visualized by creating dedicated dashboards that clearly presented key metrics. Finally, IT team training was conducted, enabling employees to independently manage and develop the new platform.
